The course aims to introduce to students some of the most commonly discussed while controversail topics in the United States. In this class, we will deal with some demanding subjects such as dating, marriage and cultural ideas of beauty. These topics are'nt chosen to shock students, but give them a chance to think about the matters we talk in everyday life but avoid in classroom. We hope to facilitate students to become critical learners, not just sit in the classroom and listen to teacher's lecture without thinking.

The course aims to introduce to students the most dominant themes and representative writers of the literatures of the United States, with a focus on an emerging group of Taiwanese American writers (TAW’s). To make the best of the class time (three hours per week), each class session is divided into two parts—the Canon and the TAW’s. Each week, the teacher will use half of the class time to introduce the major themes and canonical writers of the United States, and the students will present on assigned TAW’s. The teacher will cover most representative writers from the colonial to the 1970s, while the students will focus on assigned TAW’s. Most importantly, the TAW’s would be read against major US writers to make comparative analyses between the mainstream and the emergent. While the literatures of the US have flourished with the formation of writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathanial Hawthorne, Edgar Allen Poe, Herman Melville, etc. they’d be supplemented and perhaps unsettled by emergent TAW’s, such as Brenda Lin, Grace Lin, Justina Chen Headley, Charles Yu, Francie Lin, Ed Lin, and Tao Lin. Placing TAW’s against mainstream writers, the course aims to explore the intricate interconnections and complexities between Taiwan and the US.

文創產業成為台灣軟實力的火車頭與金雞母，無論在創意想像或產業利潤而言，都具有莫大產能，然而在當代相關政策中，英語介面的重要性似乎尚未受到注意，本課程即為瀰補這個缺點。本課程分三部份，其一配合歷史博物館的畢卡索展覽，以英文賞析畢卡索畫作，進而了解西方現代繪畫；其二以英文翻譯重要華人藝術家如陳澄波、艾未未、林磐聳等，探討當代華人藝術與跨國連結等議題；其三以師大夜市為主題，配合電影《一頁台北》，藉以結合在地，開發在地的國際基因，鼓勵學生設計英語地圖，以夜市地圖做為藝術實作。

This course aims to introduce tostudents some of the most representative literary texts written in English（and in English translation）. As we will meet two hours each week, the classtime will be divided between teacher's lectures and student'spresentations. Each week, theteacher will spend one hour introducing the selected texts from the textbook, and the studrnts will present on assigned readings during the other half of the class. The lectures will cover some of the most representative texts written in English （and in translation）, whlie thw presentations will focus on a few selected texts. It's wished that thw students willbe exposed to some of most widely-read texts of literatures written in English（and in translation） and the therefore inspired to the ideas and imagination of writers in the world.
