Item Let us read together: Development and evaluation of a computer-assisted reciprocal early English reading system(ELSEVIER, 2009-12-01) Lan, Y. J.; Sung, Y. T.; Chang, K. E.This study attempts to implement a cooperative reading environment for EFL early reading using a mobile-device-supported computer-assisted reciprocal early English reading (CAREER) system, and to evaluate its effect on the early reading skills and learning behaviors of elementary EFL learners. The design rationale of CAREER is based on the three essential components of effective reading instructions: balanced reading structure, immediate and specific feedback, and reciprocal learning scenario. Analytical results indicate that the CAREER system reduces the problems experienced by students in a conventional cooperative learning environment and effectively helps elementary EFL learners orchestrate their learning while completing individual reading tasks and pursuing group goals. The results also demonstrate that CAREER appears to be able to benefit elementary EFL learners in developing reading skills. In sum, with the support of CAREER, the early reading skills of elementary students are benefited by cooperating with each other.Item Effects of computer assisted instruction on students’ achievement in Taiwan(Elsevier, 2007-01-01) Liao, Yuen-kuang CliffA meta-analysis was performed to synthesize existing research comparing the effects of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) versus traditional instruction (TI) on students' achievement in Taiwan. Fifty-two studies were located from four sources, and their quantitative data was transformed into effect size (ES). The overall grand mean of the study-weighted ES for all 52 studies was 0.55. The results suggest that CAI is more effective than TI in Taiwan. In addition, two of the seventeen variables selected for this study (i.e., statistical power, and comparison group) had a statistically significant impact on the mean ES. The results from this study suggest that the effects of CAI in instruction are positive over TI. The results also shed light on the debate of learning from media between Clark and Kozma.Item Exploring Potential Uses of ICT in Chinese Language Arts Instruction: Eight Teachers' Perspectives(Elsevier, 2004-02-01) Lin, Janet Mei-Chuen; Lee, Greg C.; Chen, Hsiu-YenEight experienced Chinese language arts teachers from a typical junior high school in Taiwan participated in this study to discuss the potential uses of information and communications technologies (ICT) in Chinese language arts instruction. After meeting for 12 roundtable sessions and using a web forum as a supplement for exchanging ideas, they proposed a list of instructional activities which they believe could be carried out more effectively with the help of ICT. These activities are presented under three categories: reading comprehension, writing skill development, and other teaching-related tasks. The teachers also emphasized the necessity for establishing a Chinese teachers’ web site and they proposed a set of essential features to be included in it. To be able to implement the ICT-infused activities, the teachers made a number of suggestions regarding provision of adequate computing facilities and ICT training courses which they expected from the school administration.
