Abstract

Seven-word poetry (tshit-jī-á) has been a precious treasure in Taiwanese colloquial literature hundreds years on in Taiwan history. Nevertheless, the art of singing seven-word poetry now becomes declined and endangered as the Taiwanese language does. It loses its audience and heritage. To be worse, those singers are getting old and nearly retired. To break through the predicament, our project has come to a solution. Firstly, we transliterate these epic-like songs into Chinese characters, and then transcribe them into two kinds of phonetic systems, Taiwanese Romanization as well as po-pho-mo-fo symbols. We also add annotations for those difficult words. By so doing, people can learn the words and meaning when listening songs. Recently National Counselor of Culture-building has placed importance on the art of singing seven-word poetry. They set up budget for the great national master Iunn Siu-khing to teach three students each year. This year is the third one. National master Iunn Siu-khing has some tapes with his singing in the radio show when young. Fortunately these tapes are in good condition of quality. The length of the tape is more than one thousand hours. We has already had the copy right from the owner of the tapes. Besides, some old singers like Ong Iok-tshuan, Tan Bi-tsu, and Tan Po-kui also has twenty hours tapes. The project will transliterate one hundred hours of recording file into digital voices and lyrics and add subtitles for all the songs with phonetic transcriptions. A learner can listen to the songs when reading the lyrics with Chinese characters and phonetic symbols. We hope that the folklore art of singing seven-word poetry could be preserved and revitalized.
