Abstract
This thesis explores the essence of calligraphy art and discusses the possibility of cross-cutting calligraphy. The calligraphy art includes the artistic nature of time and space. Chang Leong-Yien has proposed the concept of a four-dimensional calligraphy. The concept allowed us to integrate the tangible and intangible senses of space in calligraphy, and promoted the cross-cutting calligraphy through the design or the cultural and creative industries. First of all, it is crucial to clarify the nature of the calligraphy art. Calligraphy carries special features of "have often shaped" and "of no fixed as," and the thesis uses the Four Dimensions theory of Calligraphy to discuss the space and temporality in the art of calligraphy and explores the calligraphy overall artistic concept proposed by Chang Leong-Yien. This thesis consists of three research methods: (a) book chapters, (b) interviews (c) data collection. The thesis studies Chang Leong-Yien’s calligraphy works and books, and seeks to understand his so-called " calligraphy overall artistic concept " by exploring the overall concept of the art "in the history of Western art and opera history. Interviews in the thesis included students of Chang Leong-Yien, such as Mr. Chang Ching-Zhi, and modern scholars, as they discussed Chang Leong-Yien’s experience, personal traits and thoughts on the calligraphy art.The appendix section also includes Chang,Leong-Yien’s calligraphy collections, records of his classes in the United States, and news coverage about him in the early years. The research result, data collection and calligraphic works of Chang Leong-Yien, as well as first-hand record of his teaching in classes, will serve as a reference for in-depth research of the artist in the future. The thesis is a preliminary study of Chang Leong-Yien, and follows academic rules and cross-cutting research, which is still in an experimental stage. Calligraphy as the overall artistic thought remains an ideal goal.
