Abstract
Abstract Objective: We aimed to explore the differences in balance, velocity, strike rate and muscle activation of baseball pitchers wearing different spiked shoes. Methods: The experimental participants were 7 baseball pitchers, wearing 9-spiked, 7-spiked, 7-spiked, and 6-spiked shoes. Each participant pitched 20 trials with different types. During pitching, the wireless electromyography (Delsys) was used to collect the EMG signals of the lower limbs. Statistical method: The Friedman test wasperformed for a repeated measures to determine if different spiked shoes had effects on balance, velocity, strike rate, and muscle activation. Results: The balance of both feet did not have a significant difference, while velocity and strike rate were not significant either. As for muscle activation, the rectus femoris of the pivot leg was significantly different (p=.002) during arm raising. Moreover, the vastus lateralis of the pivot leg was significantly different (p=.002) during arm acceleration, while the vastus lateralis muscle activation of the pivot leg and the rectus femoris muscle activation of the free leg were significantly different (p=.001; p=.003) during arm deceleration. During the follow through, the vastus lateralis of the pivot leg and the vastus lateralis of the free leg were significantly different (p=.001; p=.001). Conclusion: Our results indicated that the pitching motions varied, and the effect of spiked shoes might not be significant for short innings. The EMG signal with only one spike in the heel area might be weak, resulting in an unremarkable performance.Key words: Lower Limbs, Balance, Pitcher Mound, EMG
