Abstract
More and more extreme weather events are occurring in many regions in the world, which include snowstorms, droughts, floods, forest fires, and heat waves, causing enormous losses to the global economy, human lives, and social stability. Research works in the literature pointed out that journalists in Taiwan did not have adequate scientific knowledge regarding climate change. For example, they hardly knew about the potential domestic and international scenario of climate change; they had no idea about the coping strategies.Overally speaking, the climate change literacy of the media needs to be enhanced. Thus, this research aims at examining the journalists’ misconceptions about climate change and the corresponding causes. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were conducted for understanding these and then developing conceptual maps. Results showed that the TV journalists have obvious misconceptions regarding the causes, scientific facts and impacts of climate change, and the strategies to combat it. It was also found that the organizational and operational factors of the media exert large effects on their misconceptions, e.g., the sources of news, lack of decision-making power toward news content, short deadlines, and specialized areas. TIt was suggested that follow-up studies can include journalists of printed media, network media and others for examining the differences
