Abstract

本文探討詮釋資料(Metadata) 及有效線上檢索的困難，定義編目規則、標準、內容格式、架構應用及詮釋等令人混淆的概念和議題，陳述詮釋資料架構的多樣性及其不穩定應用等問題。作者比較詮釋資料與19-20 世紀傳統編目的特質，強調編目原則與標準可以運用於任何數位環境，例如英美編目規則(AACR2) 修訂版、國際標準書目記述(ISBD)以及機讀編目格式(MARC format) 都可以順利應用於目前的數位環境中。作者同時認為網路搜尋引擎，例如Google，目前並無法成功運用於網路上的文件檢索。本文最後探討電子文件與線上資源未來編目的可能選擇。

The author asserts that search engines, like Google, have failed to facilitate document retrieval on the Internet. The essay discusses metadata, another response to the difficulty of effective online retrieval, and the problems associated with the bewildering multiplicity of current metadata schemes and their uneven application. The author states that traditional cataloguing principles and standards can be successfully applied to the digital environment and defines the often-confused categories of cataloguing principles, standards, content rules, framework applications, and interpretations. The essay also discusses future options for cataloguing electronic documents and online resources. Finally, the author raises the question of whether metadata, through keyword inclusion, will be preferred as the simplest, most inexpensive way to improve search engines’ retrieval abilities or whether a more complex system, based on traditional cataloguing principles, might be developed for cataloguing electronic documents.
