漢英複合字形應用於海報創作之研究
Abstract
Composite typography of Chinese characters and English letters is a concept of simplifying the character structures. This design is attractive, interesting, flexible, and worthy of exploration; moreover, it helps combine different meanings from two languages. Based on the previous research, this study probes into the development of Chinese characters and English letters, looks for any possibility of composite typography, classifies the potential combinations, and generalizes the appropriate combinations for composite typography of Chinese characters and English letters. After analyzing the composite typography of Chinese characters, eight combinations have been generalized. Based on these eight combinations, six other combinations have been discovered after analyzing the composite typography of English letters. Among the composite typography of two languages, there are six combinations sharing similar features, indicating that different writing systems can share the same composite typology. The six combinations of Chinese characters and English letters are: (1)ligature (2)structure sharing (3)backgrounding (4)grouping (5)reconstruction (6)stacking. These are also the basic methods of combining different characters of different languages. Based on the six methods, this research takes traditional Chinese zodiac and auspicious words as the topic of creation, hoping to create new zodiac graphs and apply them to the poster designs which are also the exhibited pieces. To conclude, stroke and combination are proved to be the core elements of composite typology; however, stroke is the most important. Stroke is the media which helps link two different words. It is the frame of a word and the only similar condition among different words; it is flexible and can be used freely in creations. Combining the strokes from different words, the composite typology is thus created. Among the six methods mentioned in the study, four of them are formed by strokes. Hence, the result of this study reveals the importance of strokes in composite typology of Chinese characters and English letters.
