Abstract
With the evolution of times, comic collections in school libraries have become increasingly prevalent. The Zhonglun Library in Taipei City stands out as the first library in Taiwan primarily dedicated to comic collections. In October 2023, the Ministry of Culture further demonstrated the growing acceptance of comics in Taiwan by establishing the National Comic Museum in Taichung City. Despite this, researches and courses of comics as instructional materials or extended reading resources remain relatively sparse. As school librarians, who play a crucial role in promoting reading curricula and activities, also responsible for book purchase for school libraries, this study focuses on teacher librarians in elementary school, examines their practical perspectives on comics and their perceptions of the authenticity and objectivity of Taiwanese historical comics. This study employed semi-structured interviews, and the findings reveal the following: (1) Teacher librarians in elementary school generally do not oppose the purchase of comics. (2) Teacher librarians in elementary school tend to adopt a positive and proactive attitude towards students reading comics and often guide reading extensions based on students' areas of interest. (3) In addressing students who only read comics, most teacher librarians in elementary school believe that take time to adjustment. They implement somewhat more restrictive borrowing rules or strategies while guiding reading extensions based on students' interests. (4) Most teacher librarians in elementary school perceive that comics are inherently popular and therefore do not require active promotion to students. (5) Authoritative publishers or experts are crucial references for teacher librarians in elementary school in verifying the authenticity of Taiwanese historical comics. (6) Teacher librarians in elementary school believe that using mascots or fictional characters to present Taiwanese history can help maintain the objectivity of Taiwanese historical comics.Based on the analysis of the research findings, the study offers the following recommendations for Taiwanese publishers and teacher librarians in elementary school: (1) Publishers of Taiwanese historical comics should enhance their marketing and promotional efforts. (2) Publishers should consider adjustments in the art style, narrative, and adaptation of Taiwanese historical comics. (3) Elementary school librarians should expand their channels for acquiring information about Taiwanese historical comics. (4) When developing instructional curricula or lists of extended reading materials, librarians should use the content of the comics themselves as the criteria for selection and promotion.
