Abstract
Cloud computing, as an emerging style ofcomputing that involves various technologiesand provides virtual and scalable IT-relatedservices over the Internet, has become apopular topic in the past few years. Much hasbeen written about this concept and itsapplications in the IT and business fields, butlittle has been done in the library setting. Thispaper first introduces cloud computing withrespect to its concepts, types, and generalapplications. The focus is then shifted to whatcloud computing might mean to libraries andinformation services. The impact of cloudcomputing on the storage of libraries’ digitalassets, integrated library systems, libraries’IT infrastructures, as well as library servicesand internal work, has been investigated. The paper also explores the potentialbenefits of incorporating cloud computing inthe library environment and points out someconcerns and challenges libraries may have.
