Abstract
This study was focused on the motivations and recreation benefits of the boat-rowers on the LaoNong River. The researcher studied 427 boaters who went boat rowing on the LaoNong River, Kaohsiung County, Taiwan, using a questionnaire “Study on the participation motivations in adventure recreation and recreation benefits — the example of boat-rowing on the LaoNong River in Liugui, Kaohsiung County”. By analyzing the data with descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, the researcher found that the primary five motivations are (in descending order) 1. “To seek excitement”, “ To satisfy curiosity”, “ To promote friendship”, “ Self assertiveness”, “ To seek opportunities to learn new things”. 2. The primary five benefits of the recreation are (in descending order) “To cultivate self-challenge”, “To trust the companions and to practice self-assertiveness”, “To gain a sense of achievement”, “To add pleasure to life”, “To share the same sentiments with the companions”. 3. Different “level of education”, “occupation”, “age”, “marital status”, “level of income”, and “budget for recreation” showed significant differences in the motivations for participation. Moreover, different “level of education”, “age”, “level of income”, and “budget for recreation” also showed significant differences in the benefit of the recreation”. 4. Pearson Product-Moment Correlation produced a mid-high positive correlation coefficient between the motivations for participation and the benefit of the recreation, among which the “social sport construct” and “physiology benefit factor construct” showed the highest relativity. This study proposed five suggestions to related government offices for their policy making. 1. Improving the sanitary conditions of the public toilets. For instance, the use of sensor operated sinks, toilets, urinals, and hand dryers. 2. Planing various boat-rowing itineraries for different visitors. 3. In planning itineraries, take into consideration the natural resources of the nearby area, such as Baolai (with hot springs) and Liugui. 4. Holding more large-scale activities in different seasons to vitalize Baolai and Liugui area. 5. In case of boat-rowing accident, tactful in communicating with the media should be made so as not to be misunderstood by the public.
