Abstract
Surfing has become one of the popular activities in Taiwan in recent years. As the population of surfing has grown dramatically, the issue of safety in surfing has been deeply concerned. The purpose of this study was to discuss the relationships among Leisure Involvement, Perceived Risk and Perceived Competence of Surfers in Taiwan. Purposive sampling questionnaires were used to collect data and a total of 396 surfers were recruited at several surfing spots in Taiwan. The study used descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way Anova, and Pearson correlation analysis to analyze the collected data. The study found: 1. Surfers of different demographic backgrounds have different performance in leisure involvement, perceived risk and perceived competence. 2. Surfers of different level of leisure involvement have different performance in perceived risk and perceived competence. 3. There is highly correlation between perceived risk and perceived competence. The study found that students and women are latent consumers in Surfing Surfers with less experience need to strengthen their risks management in surfing. Finally, the study suggested that future study could sort out surfers by level of skills so as to get much more useful information.
