Abstract

The adult children and parents’ interaction time increased, relationship closer than past. Most studies in Taiwan examined intergenerational relationships, including intergenerational support, exchanges and affection. However, intergenerational relationship incorporate both solidarity and conflict behavior or positive and negative feeling. Intergenerational ambivalence refers to positive and negative feeling or behavior simultaneously. Prior research on intergenerational ambivalence has focused on the positive and negative feeling, there is a lack of solidarity and conflict behavior. The study investigate what were the types of intergenerational ambivalence between married adult children and their parents. The data used in this study were from Taiwan Youth Projects (TYP). The sample consisted of 954 married adult children, aged between 30 and 35. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to develop a typology of intergenerational ambivalence. Four types were found for intergenerational ambivalence: Obligatory-Conflict, Close-Conflict, Affective, Detached. The types of intergenerational ambivalence are affected by gender, living arrangement and filial piety. Thus, the interaction effect between adult children’s resources and filial piety the types of intergenerational ambivalence.
