Abstract
“Free drawing” is a type of painting method that derived from a psychoanalysis technique called “free association.” It signifies that with no concrete theme or content in mind, the use of any type of artistic tool and medium to create a sense of beauty in the unfinished art form, through which some sort of unconscious but meaningful ideas are presented. The author also explores the importance of the application of “free drawing” technique during my graduate studies, revealing my own artistic thought and stylistic form. This thesis consists of 5 chapters. The first chapter explains the motive and reason for choosing the topic. The second chapter studies the related issues in the fields of psychology and art history, delving into the concepts of “unconscious” and “complexes” propounded by the psychologists Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. It also probes into the idea of free association and the concept and method of free drawing. The third chapter, which is divided into two sections, focuses on the practical aspects of my artistic creation. The first section investigates art symbols in general and the use of specific symbols in my paintings. The second section discusses the formal qualities as well as the painting media and materials in my works inspired by free drawing. The fourth chapter categorizes my 11 paintings into 3 series in order to illuminate the backgrounds, techniques and formal structures of each work. The fifth chapter delivers a reflection on my artistic thinking and creative process, which could be helpful to my future development.
