Abstract
At present, modern industry and technology become the by-product of humans’ conquering and deploying Mother Nature. Due to the rapid development, a third world power gradually forms besides humans and Nature. Nature, ever since, has been deformed by artificialization. Farms and forests slowly decreased while being compressed, even become barren or deserted. Lush green woods with chirping birds are transformed into “concrete jungles” in silent springs. Originally flourishing landscapes are replaced by newly-constructed buildings, disconnecting humans from nature. Surrounded by air pollution, noise, colorless concrete or metal structures, people are compelled to leave nature. Consequently, the confrontation and metamorphism of our original meaning of life forms with misplacement and confusion, leading to more loneliness and restlessness. Po-lin Chi (1964-2017), the renowned director of “Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above” once stated: “Mountains are my childhood, also the origins of my dreams. They resemble the starting point of objects and the source of rivers, breeding various creatures. Mountains thus inspire meto devote to the field of aerial photography.” With the flow of internet sources and explosive information, modern people struggle for our survival or material enjoyment. In such hustle and bustle of disordered industrialization, we may have long lost the ability to face true self and original ideals. This art study is based on the researcher’s birthplace, hometown of landscapes and countryside. Starting from nature, the observation and depict of Taiwan include all aspects: mountains, rivers, forests, lakes and so forth. Accumulated communication with nature and aspiration from it deeply move my inner world through the circle of life. In the search of the origin and true self, I personally step into nature with life experiences and inspiration. Even with suffocating pressures in modern society, I was soothed and healed by the power of nature. I also attempt to rediscover the innocence and aggressiveness of infant-like origin. All objects and surroundings are therefore treated without discrimination, but with pure heart. Techniques in the series of “Origin” paintings utilize tempera mixed with watercolor. Tempera is an ancient and traditional media; its performance in art is very close to the author’s “original” thoughts. In addition to tempera theories and context, this paper includes research for renewed related techniques and ideas. Through the research and reflections, painting techniques and innovative thinking are expected to be improved and refined. In the hope of completely expressing origins of life, the current and future art works can resonate more with viewers in general.
