Abstract
“Monkey Play” won first place in the playwright competition hosted by Taipei Children’s Arts Festival in 2021. It is a play for parents and children. “Monkey Play” uses “monkey” as a metaphor for the “inner child” and “creativity.”As children enter the school system, they are taught to follow the rules and avoid making mistakes. They are reprimanded for misbehaving. But some monkeys can be tamed but others get wounded or even banished due to shame. I examine the story of my life and discover that despite the traumas that I have experienced, I have successfully healed myself. I have become a positive, passionate, and creative individual again. “Monkey Play” is inspired by the story of my life.“Monkey Play” is a story about Ellie, a little girl who has a monkey friend that her dad can’t see. Ellie has just started school. But her dad is always busy working. So Ellie can only play with her monkey friend. It seems that every kid has a monkey friend at school. But the monkeys are mischievous and they trick the children into cheating on the test. They all get in big trouble and Ellie is so ashamed that she banishes her monkey because she believes that her monkey is just bad influence. But without her monkey’s help, Ellie struggles in art class to come up with any original ideas. Finally, with the help of the teacher, Ellie’s monkey returns. They all come together and help dad find his long-lost monkey. This play is written for the parents out there; I hope they can all be reunited with their inner monkeys. This play is written for children; I hope they can learn to tame the inner monkeys without losing their creativity and imagination as they grow up. This play is written for myself;I want to express my appreciation for my inner monkey. Though it is badly beaten, my inner monkey never gives up on me.
