Abstract

Through respondents’ own experiences, this paper investigates the depleting events that social workers encounter during the course of their profession and how they begin the journey to recovery. Twenty-two social workers from various fields, age groups, and marital statuses were interviewed using qualitative research. Most respondents were female, between the ages of 24 and 45 years, and worked in the protective field, followed by general business work. The study revealed that some respondents felt that they were recovering, while some were on their way to recovering, and yet, others had not faced the depletion. When social workers found themselves in a state of depletion, they would work toward recovery through exercise, consultation, writing, religion, etc. Companionship and support and mutual support from significant others, family members, supervisors, and peers allow social workers to develop a fresh perspective and framework toward events that cause depletion, allowing them to move toward recovery.
