Abstract

Research of high school student extracurricular reading behavior in Kaohsiung City Using students of Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Senior High School and Kaohsiung Municipal Girls' Senior High School as an example Abstract The goals of this research are to understand the extracurricular reading behavior of high school students in the Kaohsiung area and use the understandings of the current condition to serve as reference for the expansion of high school library collections, improvement in service measures, and promotion of various types of reading activities. Literature analysis and questionnaires were used to conduct this research. The research subjects were tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade high school students in the Kaohsiung area of 2007. 659 effective surveys were recollected out of 800 distributed surveys, which sums up to a recovery rate of 82 percent. The following are the main discoveries of this research: 1. The incentive for extracurricular reading in the high school students of Kaohsiung city was mainly purposeful and non-recreational. The students chose to read because they wanted to “increase background knowledge and reading capability”. 2. The attitude toward extracurricular reading in the high school students of Kaohsiung city: Most students agreed that「extracurricular reading is a good habit」. 3. The extracurricular reading category that gained the most interest from high school students of Kaohsiung city are: “comic books” and “detective mystery novels (science fiction included)”. It concludes that reading interests differ due to the student’s gender. Females prefer “fairy tales and fables”, while males prefer “detective mystery novels”. 4. Extracurricular reading habits of Kaohsiung city’s high school students: (1)The average amount of money spent on extracurricular books is less than NT $500. (2)The average time spent on extracurricular reading is less than an hour. (3)Male students read more than female students. (4)Seventy percent of students “often” or “sometimes” visit libraries, which means high school students use the facility very often. (5)The most popular medium for extracurricular reading are picture books and magazines, which indicates that digital media has not completely replaced the use of paper books. (6)The most popular location for extracurricular reading is “at home”. (7)The most popular time for extracurricular reading is during “the weekend or holidays”. (8)The extracurricular reading material are mostly “purchased”. (9)The type of extracurricular reading is mostly chosen according to their own “interest”. (10)The source of extracurricular reading information mostly comes from their classmates. (11)The most popular extracurricular reading source or media type is “borrowed from the library”. 5. Analysis of the home reading environment: Those that subscribed to “one” newspaper ranked the highest. Those that subscribed “zero” magazines ranked the highest. The most common family reading scenario was where the parents “encouraged the habit of reading regularly”. 6. Analysis of the school reading environment: The most popular type of teacher that guided and demanded extracurricular reading activities was those that taught Chinese literature. The most popular type of school reading activity was the “extracurricular reading activity during summer/winter vacation endorsed by school teachers”. 7. Although there are cultural centers and public libraries located near the residence of the high school students, but the most popular extracurricular reading material source are still “purchased” or “borrowed from the library”. Suggestions were made according to the results of this research and given to schools, teachers, parents, education policies, and the related staff of high school libraries.
