Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the counseling self-efficacy, work satisfaction and psychosomatic symptoms of the counseling psychologists and also the correlation of these three variables. The analysis of differences across various demographic variables and the prediction of psychosomatic symptoms by demographic variables, counseling self-efficacy and work satisfaction were further conducted. A cross-sectional correlation research design was employed, and questionnaires were used as tools. Participants in the study were counseling psychologists who worked in counseling centers in public or private university in 2009/2010 in Taiwan. A total of 489 questionnaires were sent out, and 235 were received. Among them, 208 valid questionnaires were analyzed by using description statistics, T-test, Pearson product-moment correlation, analysis of covariance, and multiple linear regression methods. The result of this study demonstrated that counseling psychologists’ counseling self-efficacy is higher than that of counseling psychology interns. The counseling psychologists’ educational degree shows significant difference in their counseling self-efficacy. These counseling psychologists who have diverse educational degree and work title are different in their work satisfaction. Both the counseling psychologists’ major and educational degree are different in psychosomatic symptoms. There is a negative correlation between counseling self-efficacy and psychosomatic symptoms, and so is work satisfaction and psychosomatic symptoms. Furthermore, demographic variables, counseling self-efficacy and work satisfaction can predict psychosomatic symptoms of the counseling psychologists. Finally, suggestions are made for counseling psychologists, counselor educators, supervisors, and for future research.
