Abstract

The focus of this study is to explore the employment motivations, language proficiency and job satisfaction of Malaysian overseas students in Taiwan. Through interviews and questionnaires, we gathered insights into the experience of Malaysian overseas students working in Taiwan, their motivations for coming to Taiwan, and the underlying reasons for these motivations. This research aims to uncover some of the challenges that Malaysian overseas students face in the workplace, and explore how relevant policies can be improved to attract more outstanding Malaysian talents to develop in Taiwan. In recent years, Taiwan has actively promoted the New Southbound Policy and strengthened interaction with ASEAN countries, South Asia, and New Zealand and Australia in terms of talent mobility, capital deployment, technology sharing, cultural exchanges, and educational cooperation to establish mutually beneficial relationships. Over the past six years, the number of Malaysian overseas students coming to Taiwan for employment has increased annually. So far, Malaysia ranks first in the country with the number of valid employment permits for foreign professionals in Taiwan. This study adopted a mixed research method, with a total of 5 interviewees interviewed and 32 questionnaires received. The interview results revealed that the three main reasons for choosing to work in Taiwan include salary differences, the practical application of university-acquired knowledge, and language convenience. Most of the interviewees mentioned that to integrate into the Taiwanese environment, they learned local unique words and used the local language. Their Chinese language skills have reached a fluent level, and most of the interviewees believe that the language environment is crucial. Regarding job satisfaction, although there are varying opinions, most respondents are satisfied with the working environment in Taiwan. The questionnaire primarily investigated intentions and motivations related to studying abroad, employment, and immigration. The results showed that most respondents would consider settling or immigrating to Taiwan, They mostly held neutral views on Taiwan's study abroad system and employment environment, and some suggestions were put forward to improve and strengthen relevant policies and measures. Lastly, based on the results of interviews and questionnaires, this study puts forward several suggestions for the reference and directions of future related research.
