Abstract
Based on the flora and fauna in my orchard in Luoshao, Fushi Village, Xiulin Township, Hualien County, I created my art work with traditional Chinese fine brushwork painting skills and media of western painting, and then examine the motif. Traditionally, fine brush painting incorporates development in strokes, ink, colors. Blended with humanism, its originality is enriched without emphasis either on technique or concept. In addition, I use media from western painting in subjective depiction of objective items. As a result, I would like to discuss and analyze time, space, antiquity, and modernity with my painting. As my husband owns a two hectare orchard and organic vegetable and fruit farm in Luoshao in Taroko National Park, Hualien, producing peaches, plums, loquats, persimmons, snow pears, and seasonal vegetables. Our farmhouse faces Taroko mountain, with range upon range of mountains before our eyes, and the scenery varying with different time of day and season. Blooming and withering of flowers, as well as chirping of birds and sounds of insects add more to the variety. Our orchard is often frequented by boars, Reeves’s muntjacs, goats, monkeys, peacocks, pheasants from neighboring primitive forest. Full of wonder, nature shows its breath-taking magnificence. Among all living creatures, I am especially fond of flowers and plants. They are serene and peaceful in appearance, gracefully standing still all day. Their tranquility calm my anxiety. Furthermore, flowers show their vigor in serenity. The seemingly calmness is blended with tension; petals, leaves, and branches are full of vitality, slowly burgeoning and growing. All these impresse me deeply on my mindset of art creation. This thesis probes into the characteristics, easiness, nature, loftiness of life in fine brushwork painting, with the hope of going beyond tradition and endow it with a new life through vivid depiction of nature. The culture of art is a trajectory of history. I hope to find my place and reflect upon myself in this trajectory, so as to stride toward a broader and deeper realm of art. The completion of this thesis makes it possible for me to walk on a new path in fine brushwork flower-and- bird painting with diligence, so that I can create art with zeitgeist and unique characteristics, as well as draw my aspiration between tradition and modernity, between artistic and mundane life, between oriental and occidental culture by breaking the boundary of existing formula, media, pattern, and color.
