Abstract

Due to the severe COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan in 2021, several companies began a work-from-home program to ensure the health and safety of their employees. This study applied design thinking to improve the physical activity of high-tech company employees working from home, and evaluated the effectiveness of the intervention. Employees from high-tech companies took part in the research. The research method was carried out in accordance with the four steps of design thinking proposed by the Design Council. The results of ten employee interviews in the “Discover” stage revealed that the health problems associated with working from home include decreased physical activity, decreased communication, decreased socialization with colleagues, increased working hours, being easily distracted, changes in diet and sleep patterns, and so on. Among these health issues, the reduction in physical activity was the biggest concern. In the “Definition” stage, employees recommended holding health promotion activities and offering extra bonuses in response to the problem of insufficient physical activity while working from home. In the “Develop” stage, seven cross-disciplinary team members brainstormed to create the “21-Day Walking Program,” a LINE@ group to increase interactivity, and rewards to increase participation. In the “Deliver” stage, a total of 73 employees participated in the 21-Day Walking Program. The number of daily steps increased from 4189 to 9029 steps after the intervention, the average weekly exercise frequency increased from 1.84 to 3.45 times, the time per exercise increased from 34 to 54 minutes, and the exercise intensity increased from 2.04 to 2.29 scores, demonstrating that the 21-Day Walking Program can increase physical activity among high-tech company employees working from home. This study can serve as a reference for companies looking to increase employee physical activity and promote workplace health.
