Abstract
In the aftermath of World War II, Taiwan experienced economic stagnation across various industries, but the film sector continued to flourish, particularly with the dominance of Hollywood productions, which served as a conduit for the dissemination of American cultural influence throughout Taiwan. However, the era of martial law saw the imposition of a stringent film censorship system by the government. Under this system, films were subject to meticulous scrutiny, and any content deemed to violate censorship regulations was subject to modification, deletion, or outright prohibition. Hollywood films were no exception; in order to circumvent potential bans and financial losses, distributors often acquiesced to government demands, resulting in alterations to film narratives and subtitles. This thesis aims to investigate Hollywood films subjected to censorship during Taiwan's martial-law period. Through an analysis of relevant historical documents, it seeks to elucidate the historical context and ramifications of manipulation in subtitling, while also exploring the extent to which official censorship practices manipulated the translation of audiovisual texts.
