Abstract
In recent years, there has been an increased emphasis on English proficiency in Taiwan. Possessing a high level of proficiency in English is not just a competitive edge at work; in fact, it has become one of the requirements to get a promotion in some companies. Therefore, the need for teaching English to adult learners rose significantly. In Taiwan, there are a great deal of studies on exploring the effectiveness of English teaching. Some promote the role of first language in language teaching, while there are some studies researching on improving oral proficiency in English by interpreting training. However, most of the studies focus on children, teenagers, and college students; only a few focus on adult learners. The purpose of this study is to examine the practicality and effectiveness of Teaching Translation as a Language Skill (TTLS). Quantitative research methods were employed as the main method, supplemented with qualitative data collection. The lesson design is based on social constructivism as the teaching approach. There are 12 units which are based on communicative approach over a 6-week period. A paired t-test was conducted with SPSS Ver.23 to compare the scores of the pre-test and the post-test among the 18 participants. The results showed that the mean of the pre-test was 4.02, while the results of the post-test was 4.88. There was a significant difference in the scores; t(17)=-6.82, p<.01. To understand the learners’ perceptions of the course, questionnaire, interview and classroom observations were used to collect data. This study is an attempt to examine the effectiveness of improving oral proficiency in English for adult learners through TTLS exercises and help adult learners speak English with correct grammar and voices. With regards to teaching, this study aimed to share the teaching materials and the reflection of the course design with all English teachers.
